New LD20 Chairperson
I want to take a moment to thank you all for trusting me with the leadership of our district. I’m honored that you all feel that I can help us take steps to realize even greater success in 2022. And I’m happy to know that I’ll have a great team working with me, including a strong executive board and more PCs and activists than I ever thought I’d have the privilege to work with.
As I compose this, we are all still waiting for the dramatics of the presidential election to run its course and come to a much-needed close. And while we wait for the commander-in-chief to come to his senses, I’ve had time to ponder what’s happened over the last several months, and I am encouraged by what lies ahead of us.
We will talk more about this in the LD 20 monthly meetings in the coming year, but I want to let you all know that one of my main goals for 2021 is to make sure we are all ready to go to our new 2022-2030 districts equipped with all of the knowledge, networking and skills we can bring to the table. The statewide and congressional elections in 2022 will most certainly be hard-fought, and we know that we are a whisker away from taking control of one or both houses of the state legislature. Coming into 2022 with a full head of steam will help secure even greater success next year!
One ask I have for all of you: Please start thinking about the different ways you may want to contribute your time and talents to LD20, whether in a way we do things today, or maybe in a way we haven’t thought yet. We have a couple of existing committees, and they will remain an important part of our strategy. But if you have other ideas to help build our district and shade it even bluer, please don’t hesitate and reach out to let me know your ideas.
And as I think you all know, I’m very much into the data and visualizations, and so I will leave you with this – a comparison of the results of the 2016 presidential election and the 2020 presidential election.
Where did all of the time go? Two years ago, we were an LD with 50 PCs and many of these members were new to the political world. When I was elected Chair, who would’ve thought our LD would be in the spotlight? As we look back at the last two years, we have had a good time while also working hard to move the needle. Let’s take a walk down memory lane:
- We had our first ever Decadent Desserts and Fine Arts fundraiser where not only did we raise the most money ever for an LD20 event, but we also had our US Senator-elect Mark Kelly attend our event
- We participated in Voter Registration events at GCC, PCVV, and North Mountain Visitor’s Center
- We started the trend with BLM / Vote Protest Caravans and had three of these events in 2020
- We had fun during our 2019 holiday party where some lucky participants could claim bragging rights in the area of knowing the most about our LD with a trivia contest
- We had a Paint Night fundraiser and had three Happy Hour events utilizing local businesses
- We put in many hours at Desert Mission Food Bank and collected hundreds of pounds of food during our LD meetings
- COVID-19 only made us think outside of the box where we had Virtual Candidate Coffee events giving all a chance to ask questions of a range of candidates from US Congress to local school boards
During our last official meeting of the calendar year, let’s get together and enjoy each other virtually – the details of the meeting can be found at the end of the newsletter. We sent out detailed instructions to all elected PCs regarding the process on Saturday. If you didn't receive it, please contact Rivko Knox. I’m very happy to have been a part of making history for LD20 as is the entire executive team. It’ll be great to see everyone on Tuesday evening – don’t miss it.
FINALLY and THANKS!!!
It’s been a long four years, but the fruits of our labor have finally given us a change in the White House with President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Woo Hoo! We will also have a second Democrat in the US Senate representing AZ with Mark Kelly’s decisive win. Votes continue to be counted in our county as of this writing, so we will announce more of the outcomes in our next newsletter and during the November LD meeting.
Thanks to our LD20 Candidates and LD20 Campaign team for everything you did for our district. All of the hours spent talking to all of the voters in LD20 regardless of political affiliation because you were listening to everyone. You sacrificed much to move the needle. Special shout-out to: Judy Schwiebert, Doug Ervin, Nate Levinsky, Mary Fortney, and the rest of the team.
Important local elections for our LD
What? More elections? Yes, we have some very important local elections taking place on November 17th in LD20 for the LD20 Executive Board and 23 State Committee Reps. We have 71 elected PCs in LD20 who can run for these positions as well as vote. All LD20 elected PCs will receive information from our secretary regarding the expectations for each of the positions. As always, please contact anyone on the Executive Board, if you have questions. Get involved!
Don’t stop now!
What Have You Done to Help A Campaign?
We are only days away from the most historic election day of our lifetime. Those of you reading this newsletter are already tapped into the political scene and fully aware of our elections, but there are some citizens who are unaware of what’s at stake. Perhaps they are a new voter and feel intimidated by the choices or the process? Or, maybe they are juggling multiple jobs and don’t have time to watch TV and see the political commercials? Or, perhaps they think, what’s one vote – no one will miss it? Whatever their reasons, there are voters who need our call and coaching to vote. I know you’re thinking to yourself how can I make another call to these voters, but I’ll ask the question, how can we not? We are so close to the finish line – don’t stop now!
You’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating, all eyes are on LD20. We are the district which can change the balance of power at the state legislature in both chambers. We need everyone’s help to make this a reality. It’s time to make some calls and make some history!
